Properly managing hypertension in our later years is critical because, as we age, blood vessels naturally lose some of their elasticity, making it easier for pressure to build within artery walls and increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For family caregivers, this creates a sense of urgency because high blood pressure has no obvious warning signs, but can have adverse consequences if left unchecked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As May is Hypertension Awareness Month in Canada, we thought we would provide some tips on how to help your older loved ones, or anyone else you care about, make some simple lifestyle changes to help manage hypertension, and even possibly reduce it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep them moving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most reliable ways to lower blood pressure is through physical activity. For older adults, the emphasis should be on consistency rather than intensity. The key is finding something enjoyable and sustainable, and there are lots of options to choose from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking, light stretching, swimming, or chair-based exercises can all contribute to better cardiovascular health and improved blood pressure management. A daily walk around the neighbourhood or a short routine at home can be more impactful than occasional bursts of strenuous activity. Best of all, the whole family can participate, making the activity a bonding experience as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aim for a healthy weight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Weight and blood pressure are closely linked, but conversations around weight can be sensitive. The truth is that weight isn\u2019t just about numbers; it&rsquo;s about emphasizing good habits that will improve your loved one&rsquo;s overall well-being, such as better nutrition, regular movement, and mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even small changes can lead to gradual weight loss, which in turn helps reduce strain on the heart and lower high blood pressure. Additionally, this approach will feel supportive rather than corrective. Your loved one\u2019s doctor or personal support worker can provide recommendations on healthy ways to reduce or manage weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create a heart-healthy nutrition plan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Add heart-healthy options such as vegetables, fruits, grains, protein, dairy, and oils to their daily nutrition plan. These nutrient-dense foods provide fibre, antioxidants, and essential nutrients that help prevent arterial damage and improve cardiovascular function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also critical to avoid excessive salt intake, which can increase blood pressure, especially in older people. This means not just adding salt to food, but also being mindful of packaged or processed foods that contain high amounts of sodium. You can also reduce sodium intake by seasoning food with herbs such as dill, rosemary, oregano, basil, thyme, or cilantro instead of salt when cooking at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encourage them to moderate alcohol intake<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol can raise blood pressure, particularly when consumed regularly in higher amounts. Moderation is crucial when it comes to alcohol intake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, men who drink should have no more than two alcoholic beverages per day, while women should limit themselves to just one to help manage or lower their blood pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Try to get them to stop smoking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoking increases the risk of contracting a long list of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. That\u2019s because this dangerous habit damages blood vessels and accelerates the progression of hypertension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chances are, an older person who smokes has been doing so for decades, but it\u2019s important to remember that one is never too old to quit and that the health benefits can be seen at any age. Support programs, nicotine replacement options, and guidance from your loved one\u2019s doctor can all improve the success rate of living a smoke-free life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help them manage stress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People face a whole new set of challenges later in life. Health concerns, mobility issues, a loss of independence, financial worries, and social isolation can all cause stress that leads to increased blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage your loved one to practice mindfulness routines to help manage stress, such as deep breathing, listening to music, spending time outdoors, or maintaining social connections. Ensure your loved one takes the right dose at the correct time.
